What is a private hire car, and how is it different from a taxi?

In Scotland a private hire car must be pre-booked through a licensed operator. It cannot be hailed in the street and it cannot sit on a rank. A taxi, properly speaking, is a hackney carriage, which can do both. Both are licensed and regulated, they are simply licensed to do different things.

Fixed prices rather than meters

Every GLA Transfers journey is quoted before you book and the total you see is the total you pay. The fare does not change with traffic, the route taken, the time of day or how busy the airport is, and there is no booking fee and no card surcharge. Fares are paid securely by card at the time of booking, so there is nothing to settle with your driver at the end.

Low emission vehicles and Glasgow’s LEZ

Every vehicle on a GLA Transfers booking meets Glasgow’s Low Emission Zone standards: Euro 4 for petrol, Euro 6 for diesel, or fully electric. That means your journey can enter the city centre without restriction, and it means the fleet is newer and cleaner than the minimum the law requires elsewhere.

A fixed fare is worth most on a long journey, because a meter has hours to climb and a fixed price cannot move at all. GLA Transfers runs long distance private hire across Scotland at published prices: Oban and Fort William at £160, Inverness at £295, the Isle of Skye at £325. Rural hotels, cruise ports, distilleries, golf courses and the Highlands are routine work rather than an exception.

Licensing, drivers and vehicles

Every driver on a GLA Transfers booking in Scotland holds a current private hire car driver’s licence issued by the relevant licensing authority and is DBS checked, and licence and insurance expiry dates are monitored so nobody drives on an expired licence.

Many GLA Transfers drivers are members of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups scheme run by Disclosure Scotland, and you can request one free of charge when you book. You are sent your driver’s name, mobile number and vehicle details by text and email before the pickup, so you know who is coming before they arrive. GLA Transfers Ltd carries £5,000,000 of public liability insurance.

Booking a private hire car

Book online, in the GLA Transfers app, or by phone on 0141 473 4300, which is answered by a person 24 hours a day. Because private hire must be pre-booked, we ask for at least two hours’ notice, and for early morning flights the day before is better.

Amendments are free with more than two hours before your pickup, with no limit on how many times you change a booking. Cancel more than 24 hours ahead for a full refund with no fee.
